Many people don’t realize that clinical depression is one of the most treatable illnesses in the world. Decades of clinical studies have found that therapy helps clients recovery from the mildest to the most severe cases of depression, and it often works very quickly.

Depression Counseling

The term depression is commonly thought of as everything ranging from having “the blues” to clinical major depressive disorder. Depression is an epidemic in our society affecting 1 in 4 Americans making it the fourth leading cause of disability worldwide, costing billions of dollars every year in medical treatment and time away from work.

Are you struggling with:

  • Fatigue / Loss of energy
  • Disinterest in previously enjoyable activities
  • Diminished or increased appetite
  • Difficulty completing tasks or concentrating
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Feelings of guilt or shame
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Reoccurring thoughts of suicide

In therapy, we will help you better understand your depression, identify negative beliefs you have that may be fueling your depression. You may think you have already dealt with your stress or trauma when in reality, it's still effecting you.

The questions below cannot confirm whether or not you are depressed, but if you answer “yes” to more than three, there's a good chance that you might be experiencing clinical depression:

  • Are you bothered by things that didn't used to bother you?
  • Are you experiencing an increase in physical ailments, aches or pains?
  • Are you having trouble falling asleep at night or waking up early and can't fall back asleep?
  • Have you been feeling down most of the day and most days of the week for at least 2 weeks?
  • Has your appetite or weight recently fluctuated?
  • Are you having any problems concentrating on simple tasks?
  • Do simple tasks seem to take a large effort to accomplish?
  • Does the future seem dark, unattractive or unpleasant?
  • Do you feel lonely, or have you been withdrawing from others?
  • Have hobbies or pastimes that you used to enjoy now bring you no pleasure?

Remember, depression isn't just "the blues" or feeling low. Symptoms of depression are so strong that they inhibit one's ability to function normally in life and persist longer than just a few weeks.

Depression can be worsened by an overly busy lifestyle, big and small life changes and even the change in seasons.

We know counseling can be intimidating so we will work to ease your concerns in the first session. We like to get to know you, understand your history and what is bothering you presently. Then establish some specific goals we can work toward together in therapy. You are ultimately in control of what we work toward so we will always consult with you about how things are progressing. You may start feeling better after the first session since you know you are doing something to get your life back. After some time in therapy, you will begin to see things from a different perspective, identify underlying stressors that were fueling your depression and come up with ways to deal with those.
